How did you get here? What brought you to Tyson?
I actually had no clue this existed. I was at my mother's book club making an appearance. They were talking about their kids and one of them was talking about her kid that had gone to Tyson. I asked about it and she told me. I want to do data work and I want to do fieldwork, that sounds just like what I want to do.
Why did you choose to join the Plant Disease Team?
“I figured this will be a good opportunity to see if this is something I actually like. And yeah, it is.”
It just appealed to me at first when I was reading through the team names. Then I saw that it had a lot to do with working with data. We were gonna be making working graphs and models, which is want to do. I don't entirely love inputting data and all of that, but I like seeing progress. It's just so cool seeing the stuff you manually collected, all put together. My favorite part is seeing the results and thinking “I made a graph! This is so cool!”
How have your interests evolved as a result of being at Tyson?
Honestly, I think it's just confirming my interest in research. I always thought I was very interested in research and fieldwork but I had never done it. So I figured this will be a good opportunity to see if this is something I actually like. And yeah, it is.
What has been an affirming moment for you this summer?
Actually right before this meeting, I had finally gotten to make a graph by myself, a code one through R, which I had been trying to learn, with all of the data that took weeks to collect. So after all of that, I was able to get a little baby graph. It doesn’t really seem like much, but I created something. That was just like a really, really cool moment.
What moments have made you feel most connected to the Tyson community?
It's just the little things. I like that everybody has lunch on the HQ deck. Colloquium and [visiting professional] happy hour, even though those are learning experiences, they're really good to get together and connect and learn together, so I like those a lot as well. This is definitely the most accepting place I've ever been.
